Crawlspace Damage in Truckee: What Squirrels, Chipmunks, and Rodents Leave Behind

Out of Sight, Out of Mind — Until It Isn't
Most Truckee homeowners rarely think about what's happening under their floors. Crawlspaces are dark, cramped, and easy to ignore — which is exactly why rodent damage in them so often goes undetected for years. Squirrels, chipmunks, and other small mammals take advantage of that. Once they find a way in, they settle in and start shredding the place.

What the Damage Actually Looks Like
When rodents take over a crawlspace, the damage compounds quickly. The photo above is typical of what we see on jobs around Truckee and Tahoe Donner — insulation pulled apart and nested in, vapor barriers torn open, droppings and urine soaked into the batts. What looks like ordinary wear and tear from above is often years of activity underneath.
Common issues we find:
Insulation torn out, compacted into nests, and contaminated with droppings and urine
Chewed wiring — a real fire risk in older homes
Vapor barriers shredded, exposing the subfloor to moisture from the ground
New openings gnawed through wood framing that let even more animals follow
Why It Goes Undetected
A crawlspace is not a place most people check. You might hear the occasional scratch in the wall, smell something a little off in the bedroom above, or notice your heating bill creeping up as insulation thins out. None of those are loud enough to demand attention on their own. By the time the signs become obvious, the damage is already done — and the animals causing it have usually been there for a while.
What We Do
NV Inspections handles this kind of work across Truckee, Tahoe Donner, Kings Beach, and the surrounding area. We inspect the crawlspace, identify what's been getting in and where, trap and remove the animals, and patch the entry points to close off access. When the job is done, the animal is out and the entry is closed.
If You Haven't Looked, It Might Be Time
If it's been a while since anyone has been under your house — or if you've been noticing sounds, smells, or odd drafts — it's worth a look. Catching rodent activity early keeps a small problem from turning into a big one.
